Northwest Area Education Agency (AEA) recently purchased a Spot Vision Screener as a result of a Missouri River Historical Development (MRHD) grant awarded to the agency last May.

Judy Turner, early childhood special education nurse, applied for the grant on behalf of the AEA.

“The Spot Vision Screener is a hand-held, portable device designed to help users quickly and easily detect vision issues,” Turner explained. “These devices help immensely, as we screen children.”

Screens can be done, starting at age one. It spot-screens both eyes at once from a safe three-foot distance. The instrument is able to detect vision problems before individuals can self-identify concerns. The Early Childhood Department uses the Spot to screen children, free of charge, as part of our Early Intervention Services.  If indicated, the family can then take the results to their vision professional.
