The Iowa Association of School Librarians (IASL) sponsors four book awards each year. The list of titles for the following school year is shared with schools each January. The award books listed below are for the 2017-2018 school year.

In March of each year, students have the opportunity to vote for their favorite titles from each of the lists.

One of the Iowa AEA Online resources, Teaching Books, provides valuable teaching resources to accompany these books. For example, TeachingBooks has 25 videos, 8 book readings, and 23 lessons plans that can be used with the Goldfinch Award titles. You can see those resources by clicking on this link.

You can easily access all the teaching resources by using the pull-down menu found under the popular tab and selecting Iowa booklists. Here are the teaching links for the remainder of the Iowa Award titles:

Teaching Books also allows users to create customized book lists. TeachingBooks is certainly a valuable tool that be used to integrate literature into the classroom.

These books will also be available for checkout in the lending library later this spring. A group of AEAs is also working on bids to place many of these award books in MackinVia (eBooks and digital audio books), as well.

Order forms were sent on the vans in early January. If you didn’t receive an order form, one can be downloaded from this site: https://www.mackin.com/corp/iasl-book-awards-for-2017-2018/
