Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) is a powerful tool that directly aligns with the Characteristics of Effective Instruction found in the Iowa Core Curriculum. AIW pushes educators and students to organize, interpret, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information, instead of merely reproducing information.

This concept has taken on a life of its own at the Sioux Center Middle School where the teachers have formed a Professional Learning Community (PLC). Katy Evenson, Northwest AEA's Iowa Core Curriculum consultant, is Sioux Center's AIW coach/liaison. Together, they have taken a journey over the past two years that is yielding big results for students and teachers, alike.
