Northwest AEA is the approved provider for several state-recognized certification programs that support school activities, including Substitute Authorization. 

Substitute Authorization allows an individual to substitute in a middle school, junior high or high school for no more than five consecutive days in one job assignment. Eligible participants are persons who already hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, or who have completed the Paraeducator Certification, and are currently working as a paraeducator in a special education classroom. All candidates must be at least 21 years of age and must successfully complete the DCI/FBI background check. 

The training consists of 20 hours, plus a two-hour classroom observation. Northwest AEA has classes scheduled for September 2o and 27 and Oct. 4, 11 and 18, 2012, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Le Mars. This is also classes scheduled for Oct. 10, 11 and 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Sioux City.
