I am looking forward to being a part of the Northwest AEA science blog. I hope this turns into an opportunity to share views and ideas that is valuable for all of us. I can tell you right now that I am very excited about the opportunity to work in the science field here at the AEA. Here’s why:

The science materials center is booming! For those of you not familiar with our efforts with kit-based science, the science center trains teachers in the use of FOSS and STC kits, checks these kits out to schools on a cost basis, and coordinates the supply of consumables and critters related to each kit. Our distribution of kits for the fall checkout period is up about 20% over last fall. We think these kits are especially good for kids in that not only do they provide a solid experience in guided inquiry through a topic, they are also highly interesting and fun for both the students and teachers. At the end of the day, what good did it really do us that our students learned science if they didn’t enjoy it? We need to interest students and promote their further participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. This is actually a matter of national security!

We have taken a step toward integrating what we do with the science kits with the reading program in schools. More on this, and other reasons I am excited about science in my next entry.
