I love graphic organizers. They can be a very powerful tool when used correctly. A few things I've learned while using graphic organizers with students: 1) Don't assume they know how to use it 2) When introducing a new organizer, model it! 3) Be explicit and say how this particular organizers helps us as readers/writers, why we use it, and when we use it. 4) You don't always have to have a sheet printed out. For example, have students do a quick draw on their planning page before writing.
