Susan Jeffers is an illustrator of many different picture books. For several of her books, Jeffers has taken well-known poems or songs, and illustrated these. “Stopping by woods on a snowy evening”, “Silent night”, and “Jingle bells” are just three examples of how she has illustrated poems and songs. Jingle bells (2017) is available at Northwest AEA Media Center.

On Jeffers’ homepage, she lists the many other books that she has illustrated. Additionally, she has activity pages that pertain to art. On one of the activity pages, she demonstrates how to draw a horse. For the Nutcracker, Jeffers describes how the entire book of her illustrations came to fruition.

After studying several of Jeffers’ books and illustrations, students could choose their favorite poem or song and illustrate it in the manner in which Jeffers did. Or, they could choose a specific style of art and illustrate the poem or song in a style of their preference.
