In an article from edutopia.org titled, Ten Top Tips For Teaching With New Media, I came across a great website called Donor's Choose. The web address is www.donorschoose.org. This is a website where public school teachers can submit a project idea and donors can choose to support your project. This would be a great way to get technology into your classroom for instructional use. All you have to do is submit your project idea, the supplies that you need, and why you think this project will be great for your students. Your project goes on a list that donors get to choose from. If a donor likes your idea they will send you all of the supplies that you need. While you are doing your project you take a few pictures to send to the donor with thank you notes from your students.
The website said that it currently only supports teachers in public schools. You cannot apply if you work at a private or parochial school, or if you are a principal, administrator, staff developer, substitute, or student teacher. The website says that projects under $400 have the best chance of get accepted, but that doesn't mean you can't try for more!
This would be a great website to use if you are looking for software, digital cameras, ipods, or Flip video cameras. These items that are least expensive for teachers to get, and because they are the least expensive, teachers can request more than one of these items.
Get your creative juices flowing and think of a project to get the technology you have always wanted in your classroom. Good luck!!
