K-12 STEM Student Computer Innovation Institute, FREE!

Description: High school students engage in a two-week residential summer technology and innovation immersion program at The University of Iowa. The Innovation Institute's plan of study is intended to give students a foundation in full stack web development. Students will understand concepts in both frontend and backend development using HTML, CSS, PHP programming, backend development frameworks and essential backend technologies including databases. Students learn to build and use an open source content management system called Joomla to serve as a framework for learning various internet technologies. Content will be driven by student interest, working in teams, and pair programming. Throughout the Innovation Institute, students will develop their entrepreneurial skillset by pitching ideas, identifying problems, and creating solutions. Students will work with leading industry experts to develop their designs. Students will pitch innovative technology design ideas and have an opportunity to acquire seed funding to bring their web application to life as they work in teams with industry experts across the school year. Students will be expected to complete a functional product that will be evaluated by various industry professionals at a spring, 2015 Hawkeye Innovation Day. The Innovation Institute is administered by The Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education, theJacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship, and the Iowa Centers for Enterprise. The course is taught by Steven Davis (STEM entrepreneur), Dominic Audia (high school technology and engineering instructor), and Leslie Flynn (professor in science education). Each student selected will receive a $2,400 scholarship to cover the entire cost of the program. Dates:July -18, 2014.
