INITIAL - Issued for 2 years - no credits needed to renew it or convert it.

  • To convert to a STANDARD - Iowa public school - 2 years of teaching in your certification area, participation in mentoring and induction, and meeting the Iowa Teaching Standards.
  • To convert to a STANDARD - Non-public or out-of-state school - 3 years of teaching in your certification area.

STANDARD - 5 years - 6 credits. You can take either licensure renewal Standard credit or college credit. The hours must be taken while your license is in force. Note the issue date and expiration date on your license. Teaching experience does not count toward renewal.

  • To convert to a MASTER EDUCATOR - Evidence of completion of a Master's degree, at least 5 years of teaching experience and 6 credits during the term of your license (may use hours from Master's if taken while your license is in force. Note the issue date and expiration date on your license.)

MASTER EDUCATOR - 5 years - 4 credits. You can take either licensure renewal (staff development) credit or college credit. The hours must be taken while your license is in force. Note the issue date and expiration date on your license.

ADMINISTRATOR - 5 years - 4 credits. You can take either licensure renewal (staff development) credit or college credit. The hours must be taken while your license is in force. Note the issue date and expiration date on your license. At least part of these credits must meet requirements for renewal of your evaluator license.
