Combining research and evidence-based strategies, the following ideas for a professional

day of learning weave what educators need to know about elementary, middle and secondary

student writing for ALL (Academic Language Learners). While covering the four domains of

language acquisition, the primary focus is a successful writing strategy called “The Writing

Recipe”. This method takes a school district’s present Writing Curriculum and combines it

with The Writing Recipe to maximize student writing. If there is no specific writing curriculum,

B.E.L.I.E.V.E.! provides an extensive alignment of and The Writing Recipe that is both teacher

and student friendly. Throughout the professional day, elementary, middle and high school

educators will learn how to use The Writing Recipe in their classrooms, create a lesson using

Iowa Core Standards and researched informational text. Also, with such a rich ELL population,

participants engage in a lesson called “In Their Shoes”, demonstrating what it feels like to be a

writer in an ELL setting.
