Iowa AEAs recently added some new eBooks to MackinVia. The format of these eBooks is a little different from the other eBooks found in the collection. The new additions are called Mackin Read-Alongs. They are a special kind of eBook that includes human voice narration that is synchronized with the text on the screen. The text is highlighted as it is read and connects the sounds that letters and words make with the letters and words themselves. Yellow highlighted text indicates the current sentence that is being read, while the color purple highlights the current word as it is read.

Read-Alongs provide benefits for students. This format is an effective tool to help students just learning to read as well as emerging, struggling or students whose native language is not English. Read-Alongs help students develop the necessary skills to read independently. Read-Alongs can also serve as a motivational tool because they help readers be successful.

If you’d like to know more about Mackin Read-Alongs, you can watch this short introductory video.
